My Favourite Festival

There are many types of festivals. Different cultures celebrate different festivals. Every festival has its own meaning as to why it is celebrated. There is Chinese New Year, Christmas, Gawai, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali and many other festivals that are celebrated once a year.

For me, I celebrate Chinese New Year, Hari Raya and a few other festivals. The two festivals that I mentioned are my two favourite festivals. Although I'm a Muslim, I celebrated Chinese New. I celebrate Chinese New Year because my father is a Chinese, which means I'm a Chinese. Chinese New Year is celebrated in February to mark the beginning of the New Year, while Hari Raya Aidilfitri is celebrated after "puasa" which means fasting. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is celebrated by Muslims after fasting for a month.

The main reason why I like to celebrate Chinese New Year is because my grandparents who have migrated to the USA together with my father's younger brother would normally come back to Kuching to celebrate the festival.
I also like to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri because I get to celebrate it with my aunt who is my mother's sister, and my cousins who would normally have an  'open house' to welcome family and friends. And the best thing about both festivals is that I get to spend time with my family and friends.

We always clean our house a few weeks before the festival.  When my mother has any free time, she would make biscuits and cakes for the festive occasion. We also buy new clothes and other things which we need before the festival begins.

For Chinese New Year, my mother would make me wear "Cheong Sam" when I was younger, but I don't wear it now. I would wear "Baju Kurung" or "Jubah" for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

I don't really know about the special food for Chinese New Year but I know that there would normally be mandarin oranges.  As for Hari Raya, my mother would cook curry, "rendang" and "ketupat", while my father buys "lemang".  We'd also see a lot of other delicious food when we go visiting our friends and relatives.

Every Chinese New Year, me and my family would go to our uncle's house and we would have a family reunion there on the first morning of Chinese New Year. We would ask for forgiveness from family and friends on Hari Raya as we believe it's the best time to ask for it. Every year, during both festivals, my father would take a family picture of us on the first day.

My father is a member of an association which organizes gatherings for both festivals every year. It would be like a family gathering which would be celebrated with friends and family.  I always go to every gathering that is organised.  There would be games for teenagers, children and also adults , and  a chance to win prizes. There are also performances like lion dance, singing and dancing. Of course, we'd also have dinner as well as a chance to win the lucky draw.

I still think that both these festivals are popular since they are also being celebrated by neighbours, family and friends. I know that everyone is happy and have fun during festive occasions. I hope that they will never be forgotten and will continue to be celebrated and bring joy to everyone.
